Teacher Notes & Lessons:

Intended Audience:
This tutorial is designed with two audiences in mind. The first audience is simply anybody who wants to learn GIMP. This would include people downloading GIMP from the Internet and trying it out. The second audience is made up of High School and College Web Design teachers who might be considering GIMP as the main graphics program for their classrooms.

Introductory PowerPoint:
For Web Design teachers, I offer a that I show my students at the beginning of our GIMP unit. It is personalized to the way I teach, so your mileage may vary. The main goals of the PowerPoint are: (1) Tell students how to install GIMP for Windows on their home computers. (2) Give an overview of why we use GIMP. (3) Discuss opening and saving files in GIMP using the .XCF format. (4) Discussing layers and ideas related to layers.

PDF Lessons:
At the bottom of this page, teachers can find the six PDF lessons that are suitable for use in a High School to College classroom. These lessons assume that the teacher has made some attempt at introducing each key concept to the students.

Before students start these lessons, they should have been exposed to GIMP demonstrations in class on each topic area. Depending on the ability level of students, these lessons may take from 8 hours to 16 hours of class time or more. All lessons can be extended and additional lessons can easily be created from links provided at this web site.

Student Web Gallery:
Lesson six (below) contains a web gallery or portfolio of the previous five assignments. The goal is for students to organize all of the graphics they have created into a comprehensive portfolio. For this reason, the HTML version of the portfolio has 20 pages to accomodate up to 20 student graphics.

The final page of the HTML portfolio consists of a short student self evaluation. This allows students to reflect on the GIMP assignments, and gives teachers information on what assignments areas need work.

Student PowerPoint Gallery:
As an alternative to the HTML student gallery discussed above, a PowerPoint gallery is also provided (below). This is particularly useful for classes that do not have a web design component and for students who do not know HTML.
